Hospital resident J.D. (Dr. John Dorian) is introduced to the mayhem of Sacred Heart Hospital - and realizes being a doctor is much harder than he thought.

J.D. tries to persuade a smoker patient to quit in the hopes he'll impress Dr. Cox; Elliot and Nurse Carlas personalities clash.

J.D. is convinced that one of his patients is sick as a result of misconduct on Turk's behalf. Elliot feels disrespected by Dr. Kelsos sexism.

The hospital staff becomes worried when J.D. develops a strange attachment to an elderly woman.

J.D. finds himself caught in the middle when Dr. Cox and Dr. Kelso clash over how to treat an uninsured patient. Elliot discovers parts of her body may have healing properties. Turk tries to woo Carla but she isn't as impressed with his gift as he thinks she should be.

J.D. unknowingly sleeps with a woman from Dr. Cox's past; Carla's mother gets injured when she abandons her mom to spend the night with Turk.

Sean Hayes guest stars as a doctor who makes J.D. look bad; Turk hides his issues at the operating table from Carla.

As intern evaluations approach, Dr. Cox challenges J.D. to take a close look at himself. Turk threatens to sue the hospital after they use his face in an advertising campaign.

J.D. comes down with appendicitis during Thanksgiving. Turk volunteers to operate on him.

J.D. and Carlas friendship is in turmoil. Turk battles Dr. Kelso for a prime lunch spot, while Dr. Cox and Elliot disagree over whether or not to discharge a patient.

It's Christmas time and no one besides Turk feels like celebrating. Dr. Cox has J.D. tape the birth of a friends baby, and Elliot loses track of a pregnant patient.

Dr. Cox tries to "pitch a perfect game" by not allowing any patients to die on his shift, but J.D. is charged with making sure a social worker doesn't sue the hospital after slipping in the hallway.

Carla and Turk encounter 'intimacy issues' for the first time; J.D. becomes frustrated when his budding romance is interrupted by emergencies.

Accusations fly as drugs go missing at the hospital. J.D. tries to find time to have sex with his new girlfriend.

J.D. and Elliot try to hide their new secret romance, but everyone in the hospital already knows

Carla carries out the living will of a comatose patient by playing heavy metal at his bedside.

The interns get their first med students, and J.D., Turk and Elliot find themselves facing different challenges. DJ Qualls guest stars as a nervous hospital intern who gets on J.D.'s nerves.

After hearing what she thinks is his voice on tape, Elliot suspects Dr. Kelso had a previous career - as a country-western singer.

The parents of the interns pay a visit to Sacred Heart. Elliot is embarrassed by hers, Turk worries about how his mother will get along with Carla, and J.D. wishes his father (guest star John Ritter) was more of, well, a father.

Dr. Cox has a hard time tending to his sick brother-in-law (Brendan Fraser), and J.D. struggles to fill his mentor's shoes.

On the last day of intern year, the interns need to work together to help treat a repeat patient. Elliot makes a big decision while Dr. Kelso makes Dr. Cox jump through hoops for a job that doesn't actually exist.
