Father Francis Mulcahy
Father Francis Mulcahy, a former amateur boxer, now U.S. Army chaplain assigned to the 4077th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital during the Korean War. He mixes spirituality with the cold hard facts of life and war - and in doing so, becomes a respected leader and a reliable friend.
Father Mulcahy initially comes into the unit with his own set of challenges. He finds it hard for his spirituality to be taken seriously by a staff embedded in the ugliness of war. Yet he soon learns what it means to be in true service to others. From serving as an orderly during a food poisoning outbreak to performing an emergency tracheotomy while under enemy fire, he gradually gains the respect of the troops.
Father Mulcahy proves himself an everyday man and is often found playing piano, drinking at the Officers Club and occasionally playing poker - although he donates all of his winnings to charity. Though he is a Roman Catholic, he gladly ministers to all faiths.
He is eventually promoted to Captain after Colonel Potter intervenes on his behalf.
