Joe Kagan becomes the first black person to join the congregation in Walnut Grove, something to which Mrs. Oleson is stridently opposed. When the school for the blind is forced to close, Charles and Joe lead the blind students to a new school Walnut Grove has decided to open. Harriet joins them, having learned that they will be joined by additional blind students and their sighted teacher, Hester-Sue Terhune. Harriet believes the name Terhune is very prominent and anticipates meeting a sophisticated woman.
