TV Land is delighted to welcome Georgia Engel back to the cast of the hit series Hot in Cleveland where she will reprise her role of Mamie, Elka's (Betty White) feisty senior center screenwriting partner.
Georgia Engel was born on July 28th, 1948 in Washington, D.C, and went on to study acting at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Upon graduation, Engel returned to the district and began appearing in musical theatre productions with the American Light Opera Company. Her passion for live theatre soon found her playing the role of Minnie Fay in the Broadway production of Hello Dolly!, and performing in The House of Blue Leaves, during which a Los Angeles performance garnered the attention of Mary Tyler Moore and Grant Tinker.
From there Engel appeared in what was intended to be a one-time part as Georgette Franklin Baxter on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, but her brilliant comedic performance was so well received that producers quickly expanded her role in the series. Engel remained on MTM until the series ended in 1977, and received two Emmy nominations for her performance. During her tenure on Mary Tyler Moore, Engel struck up a friendship with fellow actress Betty White and the two began working together on Betty's next television program, The Betty White Show. Engel continued working in television, with a recurring guest role on the long running series Coach, and was cast as Esmeralda the good witch on NBC soap Passions.
Georgia continued to land recurring guest roles on television, and her tenure as Robert Barone's (Brad Garrett) spunky mother-in-law on Everybody Loves Raymond won her three back-to-back Emmy nominations. During that time Engel also performed onstage in a female remake of The Odd Couple alongside I Dream of Jeannie's Barbara Eden. Engel's most recent television credits include guest roles on The Office and Two and a Half Men.
