2. THE MANHUNT

The state police ask Andy and Barney to step aside while they search
for an escaped convict in Mayberry.

Barney's Mother, played by Lillian Culver. Otis Campbell in the Mayberry
choir.
3. THE GUITAR PLAYER
Air Date: 10-17-60.
Andy schemes to help a young local guitarist (James Best).
*Factoid: James Best would go on
to play Sheriff Coltrane in "The Dukes of Hazzard" among many other
guest-starring roles in TV and film.
4. ELLIE COMES TO TOWN
Air Date: 10-24-60.
Andy is smitten by Mayberry's new "pharmacy gal"--Miss Ellie Walker
(Elinor Donahue).
*Look For: Barney reciting the "sheriff's
rules" to Andy and Ellie and Opie making faces at each other in the
drugstore window.
5. IRRESISTIBLE ANDY
Air Date: 10-31-60.
Andy comes to believe that Ellie is a "deadly female hunter" out to
marry him.
*Look For: Barney wears his signature
"salt & pepper" suit for the first time in this episode.
6. RUNAWAY KID
Air Date: 11-07-60.
Opie befriends an eight-year-old runaway.
7. ANDY THE MATCHMAKER
Air Date: 11-14-60.
Andy, trying to lift Barney's spirits, stages a minor robbery and tries
to match his deputy with a shy seamstress.
*Factoid: The Snappy Lunch (mentioned
in this episode) was actually one of Andy's favorite eating spots when
he was in High School.
8. OPIE'S CHARITY

Andy becomes upset when Opie contributes a measly three cents to the
Underprivileged Children's drive.
9. A FEUD IS A FEUD

Andy strives to end a long-running feud between two neighboring families.

10. ELLIE FOR COUNCIL

Ellie's decision to run for town council sparks a battle of the sexes.

wife. She played Andy's housekeeper, Rose, in the first episode.
11. CHRISTMAS STORY

A modern-day Scrooge (businessman Ben Weaver) causes trouble on Christmas
Eve.
*Factoid: This was the only Christmas
episode and the first directed by Bob Sweeney.
*Blooper: Andy incorrectly reads
a letter from the Hubacher Brothers as "Merry Christmas" instead of
"Greetings" from State Prison.
12. STRANGER IN TOWN

Mayberrians (especially Barney) become suspicious of a stranger who
seems to possess knowledge about everyone.
*Look For: Walter Baldwin, making
his only appearance as Floyd the Barber before Howard McNear assumed
the role.
13. MAYBERRY GOES HOLLYWOOD
Air Date: 01-0261.
Almost everyone puts on airs when a Hollywood film crew decides to use
Mayberry as the backdrop for a movie.
*Look For: The town council is all
men. Ellie must have lost her bid in episode #12.
14. THE HORSE TRADER
Air Date: 01-0961.
Ignoring his own advice to Opie, Andy plays fast and loose with the
facts when trying to sell the old town cannon.
*Look For: Lucille Ball on the cover
of TV Guide on the magazine rack at Walker's Drug Store.
15. THOSE GOSSIPIN' MEN
Air Date: 01-1661.
After Andy teases the fairer sex about gossiping, Aunt Bee pulls a prank
to prove that men are gossips, too.

16. THE BEAUTY CONTEST

Andy is chosen to be the sole judge of a local beauty pageant. The entrants

17. ALCOHOL AND OLD LACE

Andy and Barney, on a still-smashing spree, are surprised when a trail
leads them to two spinster sisters.

18. ANDY THE MARRIAGE COUNSELOR

Andy counsels a Mayberry couple who are constantly bickering with each
other

19. MAYBERRY ON RECORD

Andy becomes suspicious when a record promoter comes to town to gather
material for a folk music album
*Guest Star: Hugh Marlowe, who played
Ellery Queen on TV during the 50s, plays Mr. Maxwell. Best known as
Jim Matthews on the soap, Another World.
20. ANDY SAVES BARNEY'S MORALE

Barney's overzealous policing enrages the people of Mayberry.
*Listen For: "The Manhunt" music
is played at the end of this episode. It's in this episode that it becomes
"Barney's Theme".
21. ANDY AND THE GENTLEMAN CROOK

An infamous con artist, held temporarily in Mayberry, manages to enchant
everyone except Andy.

Andy tries to help Barney express his lovestruck feelings for Thelma

25. A PLAQUE FOR MAYBERRY

Mayor Pike (Dick Elliott) and the townspeople are shocked to discover
that the last living descendant of Revolutionary War hero, Nathan Tibbs,
is Mayberry's town drunk, Otis Campbell.

A by-the-book courthouse inspector condemns Andy and Barney's lack of
proper procedure while Andy deals with a local bootlegger.

Ellie encourages and helps a female farmhand to express her femininity.

out what's really going on at Sam Becker's farm.

Patty Duke's father in "The Patty Duke Show" in addition to a variety
of other television and film roles.
*Factoid: This was the first episode
by the prolific writing team of Jim Fritzell and Everett Greenbaum.
30. BARNEY GETS HIS MAN

An escaped convict vows revenge on the man who sent him back to prison--Barney
Fife.

Barney uses his "body as a weapon" to capture the crook.
31. THE GUITAR PLAYER RETURNS

Mayberry guitarist Jim Lindsey (James Best), a success as a solo artist,
returns to a hero's welcome. However, Andy suspects trouble.
32. BRINGING UP OPIE

Aunt Bee, believing that the jailhouse environment is adversely affecting
Opie, forbids the lad to spend time at the courthouse.
