Matthew Perry

Chandler Bing

Although Matthew Perry was born in Massachusetts, he was raised a Canuck in Ottowa, Canada — where he became a top-ranked junior tennis player! But when he moved to Los Angeles as a teen, Perry decided to give up tennis to pursue acting, practicing improv, garnering acclaim in school plays, and performing bit parts on classic sitcoms like Silver Spoons and Charles in Charge until he was cast opposite River Phoenix in A Night in the Life of Jimmy Reardon.

Most Americans remember the heavy dose of hilarity Perry brought to the cast of Friends as Chandler Bing, stealing many a scene with his quick wit and instinct for physical acting. Aside from Friends, you might have seen him quick-quip his way through Aaron Sorkin’s Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip as a late-night TV comedy writer, or leading comedic casts in the boisterous comedy feature The Whole Nine Yards (and its sequel, The Whole Ten Yards), and in the adult-coming-of-age classic Seventeen Again, sharing a character with the winsome Zac Efron.

Perry shares a TVLand Award for "Most Wonderful Wedding" with costar Courteney Cox, in addition to wins and nominations at the Teen Choice Awards, the SAG Awards, the Emmys, the American Comedy Awards and the Golden Globe Awards, for his work on Friends, Studio 60, The West Wing, and the critically acclaimed TV movie, The Ron Clark Story.

Perry has been cracking up sitcom audiences since he was a teenager, starting with Second Chance (later renamed Boys Will Be Boys), playing a young version of a dead guy who gets a—you guessed it—second chance at getting into heaven. Most recently, Perry played a sportscaster who must attend group therapy sessions on Go On and guested on The Good Wife. We’re waiting for Perry’s next project with bated breath!

And of course, in the meantime, you can check in with Chandler Bing on Friends on TVLand Wednesdays at 9PM/8C.

Character Bio

Chandler Bing’s friends can depend on him to bring the comic relief! This endearing jokester (and Ross Geller’s college roommate) has a quick quip for most any situation, from his parents’ divorce at age nine (when he first discovered humor as a defense mechanism… and took up smoking) to defusing arguments brewing between his more high-strung chums. Of course, Chandler’s wit masks a sensitive, insecure, easily embarrassed, Baywatch-obsessed man-boy, who’s the best friend (and maybe boyfriend?) you could ask for. The only one of the gang with a real job, in an office! Chandler generously helps his friends whenever they need it (of course, his struggling actor roommate, Joey, tends to need it most).
