Matt LeBlanc

Joey Tribbiani

Matt LeBlanc was born in Newton, Massachusetts, outside Boston. He tried commercial acting on a whim, but was signed to management by the end of the day. After a couple of years’ struggle in New York, Matt booked a collection of commercials including Heinz ketchup, Levi’s jeans, Doritos and Coca-Cola, and his first regular role, as a student on TV 101, about a TV news photographer who teaches high-schoolers to produce a weekly cable news show.

From there, LeBlanc worked steadily, from guest parts on Just the Ten of Us, Married… With Children, and The Red Shoe Diaries to regular roles on Top of the Heap and Vinnie and Bobby. Then, he landed the role of clueless actor Joey Tribbiani on Friends, and was thrust into the limelight. LeBlanc’s character was the only Friend who moved on to have his own series, the eponymous Joey, which ran for two seasons.

During Friends, LeBlanc also had roles in feature films including Charlie’s Angels, Lost in Space, and All the Queen’s Men, starring alongside Eddie Izzard—and appeared in Jon Bon Jovi’s music video for Say It Isn’t So. After Friends, LeBlanc joined a number of his former costars in guest roles on Lisa Kudrow’s Web Therapy on Showtime.

These days, LeBlanc can be seen playing a hilariously fictionalized version of himself on the BBC program Episodes, collaborating with Friends creator David Crane, about a British show that gets recreated for American television. He also stars in a new film, Lovesick, with Chevy Chase and Ali Larter.

LeBlanc has taken home a SAG Award, both Teen’s and People’s Choice Awards, and most recently a Golden Globe for his performance on Episodes. He’s also been nominated for four Emmy awards.

Of course, you can catch Matt LeBlanc as sweetheart Joey Tribbiani on Friends on TVLand Wednesdays at 9PM/8C.

Character Bio

Joey Tribbiani grew up the only boy in an Italian-American family of eight children. Growing up with all those sisters has made him quite the astute ladies’ man, he’s hardly ever without a date! A struggling actor, Joey spends a lot of time going on auditions and taking odd jobs for extra money, mostly to pay rent to his roommate Chandler, but often to buy his favorite food, sandwiches. He depends on his friends to support his ambitions. Though he can be overly literal, Joey’s childlike innocence can sometimes turn out to be surprisingly wise, putting things in perspective for his pals, and his kindhearted nature is more than enough in return.
