Lisa Kudrow

Phoebe Buffay

Lisa Kudrow grew up in Los Angeles and studied Biology at Vassar College, intending to follow in her scientist father’s footsteps. She did indeed work with his practice while breaking into acting, joining Los Angeles’s Groundlings acting troupe. She also landed TV and film roles on Cheers, Life Goes On, and Coach.

Before Friends, Kudrow could be seen playing the oddball Ursula on the NBC hit sitcom Mad About You, with Paul Reiser and Helen Hunt. When she was cast on Friends, it was in the role of Phoebe Buffay—Ursula’s twin sister! Of course, Phoebe was Kudrow’s breakthrough role, as she kept audiences’ heads spinning with her quirky, insightful character.

During Friends, Kudrow appeared in a ton of successful film projects, including The Opposite of Sex, Clockwatchers, Analyze This and Analyze That with Robert De Niro and Billy Crystal, Wonderland, and the hysterical Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion with Mira Sorvino.

Following Friends, Kudrow was involved with an assortment of successful projects including The Comeback on HBO and films including P.S. I Love You, Paper Man, Easy A, and The Other Woman, starring with Natalie Portman.

Most recently, Kudrow played the sidesplitting psychotherapist Fiona Wallice on web-to-Showtime TV series Web Therapy, where she welcomed fellow Friends alumni Matthew Perry, Courteney Cox, David Schwimmer, Matt LeBlanc and Jennifer Aniston as guest stars. Kudrow returned the favor as well, appearing on Courteney Cox’s Cougar Town as a cruel dermatologist.

Kudrow has taken home an Emmy, a SAG Award, a Gracie Allen Award, and most recently two Webby awards for Web Therapy.

Character Bio

Phoebe Buffay, the musical, mystical… okay, let’s just say it: Phoebe is the quirky friend. Phoebe answered Monica’s ad for a roommate, but she moved out before too long due to compatibility issues; Phoebe was the slob to Monica’s neatnik, and they both wanted to preserve their friendship. She’s also a talented songstress, and always has new tunes to play for her friends at the coffee shop. After a hard-luck childhood, she and her identical twin sister, Ursula, lived on the streets from age fifteen on, so if you mess with Phoebe, you might get stabbed. On the other hand, she’s charming, funny, and a licensed massage therapist, so she has myriad ways of getting what she wants!
