It's been six months since Sam left for Italy to stop Diane's marriage to Frasier, and he is now thankful that he didn't find them. Frasier, an emotional wreck after having been dumped by Diane, visits Cheers and informs Sam that Diane is now working in a convent. The death of Coach has saddened everyone. Sam needs a new bartender and hires Woody Boyd, a young, enthusiastic farm boy who had been corresponding with Coach.

Woody desperately misses his hometown girlfriend, Beth, so Sam and Diane arrange for her to pay a surprise visit. Frasier pays his bar debt by working as janitor at Cheers, hoping to make Diane feel guilty for leaving him.

A coat left in the bar arouses Diane's curiosity about the owner, and she fantasizes that he could be her Prince Charming. Sam puts her boasting to the test by making her agree to go out with the man if he returns.

Carla vehemently objects when Anthony, her 16 year-old son, requests her permission to marry Annie, his high school sweetheart.

Diane's imagination runs wild when she is haunted by Andy, the crazed actor who once tried to strangle her.

Diane entrusts Sam with a rare and very valuable book from her collection as collateral for money he loaned her, but a small accident turns into a very costly mistake for Sam.

Out of desperation, Carla places an ad in the personal classified listings in the paper. When she gets no response the guys at the bar decide to intercede.

Norm is forced to stop joking and take a serious look at his marriage when a female neighbor informs him that his wife Vera and her husband are having an affair.

The Cheers gang challenges the regulars from a rival bar to a bowling tournament to avenge their losses in a variety of other sports events.

Cliff's father, who deserted him when he was a child comes to visit. Sam tries to keep Diane away from his latest flame.

Sam feels flattered when Diane asks to use him as the subject for her psychology term paper on the 'Don Juan Syndrome,' but he soon feels like a freak when her professor and classmates come to study him in person.

When Woody becomes hooked on football game betting pools, Sam steps in to make him see the error of his ways. In trying to protect Woody he makes a decision that costs Woody thousands of dollars.

When no one bids on Sam's baseball jersey, he is forced to admit that his days of glory are far behind him. Meanwhile, Norm is busy wining and dining potential clients who obviously share none of his interests.

A fellow psychology student of Diane's is covertly taping the Cheers' regulars for research purposes. The gang plots to get even with Diane.

Frasier has not been the same since Diane dumped him in Europe, so she and Sam unite to help him get back on his feet and gain the confidence he needs to return to psychology.

Cliff has a real dilemma, but he's loving every minute of it, when both Carla and Diane accept his invitation to be his date for the Postman's Ball.

When the pilot of a small airplane collapses while in flight, passengers Sam and Diane think they are about to die. In their panic they reveal their true feelings for each other.

Diane is sinking into depression because she feels she is being excluded from the bar's clique, so Frasier creates a plan to cheer her up. She mistakenly believes it was Sam's idea and her old feelings for him are rekindled.

Woody fears for his job when Sam hires a temporary bartender who wins the customers' hearts as he puts on a delightful show with every drink he pours.

Sam takes a sudden interest in politics when a lady he is dating, Janet Eldridge, runs for city councilwoman. Diane decides to support Janet's competitor because she fears that if Janet wins, she will also win Sam.

Senator Gary Hart makes a cameo appearance at Cheers. Sam's relationship heats up with Councilwoman Janet Eldridge. Janet convinces him to fire Diane but Diane beats him to the punch by quitting.

While Sam is making a valiant attempt to be part of Janet's political career, Diane poses as a reporter at the press conference and heckles Sam until he loses his temper. Over the phone, Sam proposes marriage to someone, but to whom, it is not clear.
