Although
he was only thirteen years younger than his Ponderosa papa,
Pernell Roberts was chosen to play the role of the eldest Cartwright
offspring, Adam.
With a history in stage acting, Roberts moved out west in
1957 to take movie and TV roles. He soon found himself on
the Ponderosa, and a bit miffed at his instant fame. During
that time, Roberts, like his cast mates, recorded an album
of folk songs.
Wanting to pursue more serious roles, Roberts exited the
series after six seasons. Unfortunately, it was the era of
severe typecasting and fourteen years of bit parts and minor
theater roles. Fortunately, Roberts had a second chance at
a hit series, and became known for seven years to a new generation
of fans as Trapper John, MD. He is now retired from
acting.
