For
many years, Jean Stapleton was essentially a supporting player
in various stage productions. She began getting occasional roles
on television in the '60s on shows like, Route 66, Dr.
Kildare, Studio One, and Philco Playhouse.
Stapleton also garnered a few supporting parts in feature films
like Damn Yankees and Bells are Ringing.
It wasn't until she was nearly 50 years old that Jean Stapleton
became a lead player with the role of Edith Bunker on All
In The Family. She remained with the show from 1971 through
1980, picking up three Emmy Awards for best Actress in a Comedy
Series along the way. Stapleton has continued a healthy acting
career, with parts on stage, TV movies and feature films.
She was seen on Caroline in the City, in the 1996 feature
Michael (with John Travolta) and she provided the voice
of the Owl in the 1998 remake of Dr. Dolittle.
