3rd Rock from the Sun
Space, the final frontier. Or in this case, the final efforts of aliens to understand what makes us human peons tick. The Emmy and Golden Globe-award winning series 3rd Rock from the Sun ran from 1996 to 2001. It featured five aliens posing as a "typical" American family as they gathered information about Earthly customs, sociological habits and important snack foods. They named themselves The Solomons, and as Dick (artfully portrayed by deadpan-humor king John Lithgow) himself put it, "Sally's the woman, I'm the tall dashing man, Tommy's the adolescent and Harry's the funny-looking one." Aliens have had their moment in the sun onscreen many times, rising in popularity in a nuclear-obsessed 1950s and continuing to dominate in the space-d out '70s. But 3rd Rock turned the alien-invasion format on its head with its loveably clueless resident "visitors." As Sally (combat expert Kristen Johnston) once asked Professor Mary Albright (Jane Curtin), "Isn't there a place where people can have mindless sex with different partners?" Mary's response? "Yeah! It's called 'the '70s.'" Welcome to Earth, baby!

Mary is going to Borneo for a year, and Nina tells Dick the only conceivable way to keep Mary from leaving is a marriage proposal. The others think it's a terrible idea because she's sure to discover they're aliens. When Sally apprehends a criminal at the supermarket, Officer Don is resentful.

Harry receives a transmission from the Big Giant Head informing them the time/space portal will be open tomorrow night, and Tommy tells Harry they're leaving. Dick is determined to say goodbye to Mary before they leave. When he sees Mary, he asks her to marry him. Harry dreams about how good life has been to him. Dick tells Harry, Tommy, and Sally that he won't be going back with them.

Dick answers Mary's phone at the office and accepts an invitation for the two of them to spend the weekend with Mary's parents. Dick is desperate to win the respect and approval of Mary's parents, but it quickly becomes apparent that the parents are a bit bizarre.

Dick's baffled that Mary's still upset about his having a wife; but they're both guilty of indulging in a few practical jokes for revenge. Tommy's drafted into playing lead guitar in a garage band. Sally cancels a date with Officer Don to go to a yoga class with Mary. Don gives Sally an ultimatum, and she's delighted; she has a crush on her yoga instructor and is determined to have him.

Dick arrives at the doctor's office to take his first physical, but gets frightened and leaves. Mary and Nina stress to Dick how important it is for him to go get his physical, Dick goes back to the doctor, but this time leaves in the middle without his clothes. Harry is at home watching television when he begins to hear ghoulish wails. Dick arrives home and also hears the frightening sounds. They attempt an exorcism.

Dick gets called for jury duty, and finds the experience baffling from the very beginning. Dr. Albright hires Harry and Tommy to take part in an experiment in which they use absolutely no words for five straight days. Dick drives his fellow jurors crazy by refusing to join them in convicting the defendant.

King of the Jig, Peter Connelly, is in town with his show, and Dick is upset that Mary refuses to go with him. Dick is nearly arrested as a scalper, but Officer Don rescues him. Harry goes to night school and is frightened and obnoxious until his teacher breaks down his defenses.

Dick, Harry, Sally and Tommy are enjoying a sinfully delicious dinner of ice cream and cake when the discussion turns to the concept of sin. Tommy, who just studied the seven deadly sins in school, begins to list them and starts with pride. The other aliens present him with a series of examples, each illustrating that Dick is as guilty of the sin of pride as one could be. This holds true for the remaining deadly sins: anger, envy, lust, greed, gluttony, and sloth. When it comes to sinning, it seems that all of the Solomons are equally adept.

Dick thinks Harry's watching far too much television and orders him to give it up for a week. Tommy and Mary's have an intellectual conversation and Tommy decides he wants to date her. Sally is hired as an assistant by Webber, a man who's very impressed by her appearance.

Mary is busy planning her annual New Year's fondue party, but Dick can't understand why this holiday is such a big deal. Harry is having a huge New Year's bash at the bar, and Tommy volunteers his services a s party coordinator. Dick becomes depressed when he realizes that everyone he knows has had a productive year, but he's accomplished almost nothing.
