John Lithgow developed his love of acting while attending Harvard University. After graduating magna cum laude, Lithgow attended the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts.
Lithgow made his Broadway debut in 1973 with "The Changing Room"; the role earned him his first Tony award. He has appeared in other productions including "Requiem for a Heavyweight," "My Fat Friend," "Sweet Smell of Success" (for which he won his second Tony award) and "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels." His film credits include The World According to Garp, Terms of Endearment, (both earned him Oscar nominations) Footloose, Kinsey, Shrek and more.
TV audiences know Lithgow as Dr. Dick Solomon, the main character on 3rd Rock from the Sun. Solomon is the high commander and leader of the expedition to Earth. He was nominated for three lead actor Emmys for this role. Lithgow is also a published author who has penned several children's books.
