When Stefan Vardon, 14, wrote a heartwarming school essay about his deaf parents and his blind and autistic 12 - year - old brother, he had no idea that it would lead to the team from Extreme Makeover: Home Edition showing up at his family's Oak Park, Michigan home. The design team transformed the Vardons' ordinary 980 - square - foot house into a dream home outfitted with the latest communications and safety devices.

When her boys were infants they were orphaned by a crack - addicted mother, so Lucy Ali adopted them. As the now - healthy boys approached adolescence, she decided to renovate. She gave the contractor a large sum of money to begin the renovations, but the contractor never finished the job. The house is uninhabitable; Lucy and her sons have been forced to live as urban refugees. Until the Extreme Makeover crew stepped in.

Consuela is the founder of the non - profit organization Operation Confidence which, as of 2004, has helped almost 10,000 disabled individuals find gainful employment. Her efforts don't stop when she gets home, when one of the people she works with needs a place to spend the night, Consuela sleeps in a chair. With limited funds and with all of her time taken up by her philanthropic activities, Consuela has had no opportunity to tend to the upkeep of her own house.

When Benjamin Burns was born he was an apparently healthy baby boy. Six months later, Benjamin's sister was playing with her baby brother and, when he started to fall when she grabbed his arm, it fractured. In the weeks that followed, routine tasks resulted in more visits to the hospital. Child Protective Services was called and Benjamin was separated for three months from his parents. The Burnses were eventually cleared of the abuse charges and allowed to bring their son home, but he needs an environment better suited to his condition. Mr. T guest stars.

Glen and Jennifer Elcano were living their dream. They used to spend practically 24 hours a day together running and operating their small family farm in Bakersfield, California. Then, one fateful day, Glen was driving home from was killed in a car accident. At a scholarship fundraiser for the Elcano children, country superstar Randy Travis performed songs from his latest CD to a Bakersfield community that wanted to contribute something to this deserving family.

Patricia Broadbent, a longtime advocate for children and former social worker, has given birth to one child and adopted six others, three of whom still live at home. Patricia is currently undergoing successful chemotherapy treatments. She came to realize, however, that her house is not suitable for her daughters to continue to thrive in. When the team from Extreme Makeover: Home Edition learned of her plight, and decided that she , should have a house she will feel proud of to pass on to her beloved children. As a struggling widow with three daughters, Roseanne Dore is no stranger to hardship. Their home, burned to the ground in March 2004, and Roseanne found out that their insurance policy lapsed when their agent retired. The structure was uninhabitable. While figuring out what to do, Roseanne moved her daughters into a half - built, backyard utility shed. Roseanne, works as the cafeteria server at the local elementary school and is a Girl Scout leader.

Dusty Medeiros, the mother of two had been working at a computer store for eight years. Her life began to unravel when she and her boyfriend broke up, and raising two children became overwhelming. She could no longer afford her apartment, and she bounced around with no permanent place for her or her two young children. The three - bedroom unit of the new duplex built by the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition team will be home to the Medeiros family. They will pay a small rent until they can get back on their feet, and can stay in the duplex until they and Colorado Homeless Families, who will actually own the building, decide they are ready to move out.

Jhyrve was diagnosed with the rare genetic disorder Krabbe Disease, which is caused by an enzyme deficiency. Her only chance of survival was to receive a new treatment in which she'd be given a cord blood transplant at Duke University Hospital in North Carolina. Meanwhile, near Oakland, California, Jhyrve's 14 - year - old brother, Lucas missed his mother at his eighth grade graduation but understands that she must stay in North Carolina with his sister. A new home will bring the family together.

In March 2000, Rodney Anderson of South Central Los Angeles was on his way to the NBA and a degree in social work. One day he went for a walk - - the last time he would do so. Gang members approached Rodney and shot him and left him paralyzed from the waist down. A contractor began work on the Anderson home to make it wheelchair - accessible. The job wasn't complete leaving the house exposed to the elements. Rodney is an honor student at CSUF and attends classes and basketball games in a wheelchair. While Rodney and his family went on vacation, CSUF held a special campus event where Rodney's basketball number was retired.
