What It is

This fantastic bronze sculpture was placed in the exact location where Mary Richards threw her famous tam into the air, a gesture of freedom and career-girl euphoria that inspired generations of women to pursue their dreams. This is the second-ever TV Land landmark.

Why you should visit

Aside from having your loved one snap a photo of you in your cutest hat, Nicollet Mall forms the cultural and commercial heart of Minneapolis. In the summer, it hosts a popular farmers' market and in the winter, the Holidazzle Parade lights up the mall.

Did you know
  • The hat used in the now famous “tam toss” actually belonged to MTM show director Reza Badyl’s step-daughter, the now-famous actress Jennifer Jason Leigh.
  • The famous opening sequence wasn’t actually filmed until after the first eight episodes had been completed.
  • The curious onlooker caught in the freeze-frame of Mary Richards' triumphant moment was a local woman named Hazel Frederick -- who just happened to be out shopping the day the sequence was being filmed. Frederick passed away in 1999 at the age of 91.
